November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month

Did you know that approximately 29 million Americans age 20 and older have diabetes? One third of those are at risk for vision loss because they do not even know that they have the disease. Diabetics are 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts and 40 percent more likely to develop glaucoma than people without diabetes. Diabetics are also at risk for diabetic retinopathy, which can result in permanent vision loss if left untreated. Every year 12,000 to 24,000 people lose their sight due to diabetes. The American Optometric Association encourageseveryone to see their optometrist on a yearly basis to ensure early detection of eye diseases and to maintain eye health.

October is Eye Injury Prevention Month

Did you know that over one million people suffer from eye injuries each year? Ninetypercent of those injuries could’ve been prevented by wearing appropriate protective eyewear. Many ordinary activities like mowing the lawn, jump-starting vehicles, or using household chemicals for cleaning can lead to very serious eye injuries. The eye’s delicate tissues are easily burnt by chemicals in detergents and ammonia, and lawn equipment can easily propel debris. Prevention is the first and most important step in avoiding serious eye injuries, so be sure to always protect your eyes with appropriate protective eyewear.

Did you know that over 20 million Americans age 40 and over have cataracts? A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. They are the leading cause of blindness worldwide; however, in most cases, vision loss from cataracts is reversible. Scheduling regular eye examinations is the key to early detection and treatment. The American Academy of Optometry also states that eating a diet rich in antioxidants like spinach, broccoli, and eggs may decrease your risk of developing cataracts.

July is UV Safety Month

Did you know that sunglasses are far more than just a fashion statement? Everyone knows to wear sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, and it’s just as important to protect our eyes. Prolonged exposure of our eyes to the sun’s high energy rays can cause vision loss through the formation of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Check to make sure that the sunglasses you wear block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays, and wear them anytime you’re outside for prolonged periods of time, even when the sky is overcast.

It's crazy to remind people to start thinking about end-of-year tasks, what with this beautiful fall weather we've had, but it is time to plan! Don't forget that insurance benefits and Flex Spending or HSA account money may need to be used by the end of the year. Eye exams and related services, glasses, and contact lenses all count towards those health expenditures.

Additionally, if you were unhappy with your ocular health coverage and your benefits are up for renewal, make sure you plan appropriately to ensure you and your family are covered! If you have any questions about health coverage, don't hesitate to call our office. Happy fall!

New Updates!

Well, I've been a bit behind in updating this blog, but can I use motherhood as an excuse?! :) My husband and I were very happy to welcome our little boy, Quinn, to the world earlier this year and I'm still playing catch up from everything I fell behind on....including this blog!

Exciting updates to our office include introduction of the Z-vue Aberrometer, a machine that maps out tiny imperfections in your vision that cause poor clarity. The technology allows us to correct these aberrations in high quality and high performing visual lenses. The best part is that these lenses are customized to each wearer, ensuring we are doing all we can to help you reach your maximum visual potential!

Happy New Year from Complete Eye Care of Medina! The end of the year was quite busy for us at the office due to patients using up flex spending accounts, health savings accounts, and insurance benefits that expired at the end of 2009. We love to help all of our patients in determining how our products and services will best serve them!

I invite you to consider in 2010 how to elect your medical expenditures. We are happy to price out glasses, contact lenses, eye exams and any number of other services so you know what to expect in relation to eye care expenses. Look carefully at your insurance so you know what your coverage is. Oftentimes, major medical insurance will cover a complete eye exam every year.

Greetings! I have created this blog as an extra source of information for patients and those interested in Complete Eye Care of Medina. I hope to periodically update data and useful information for patients in this blog......maybe even post some human interest aspects!

I would like to first inform people about a wonderful program in my office called InfantSEE. It's the first-of-its-kind, public health program through the American Optometric Association that gives babies ages 6-12 months a complimentary, comprehensive eye exam. This exam ensures normal development and catches possible problems at an early age. If you've ever heard of someone having a "lazy eye" or "wandering eye," this exam can detect those issues and correct the eyes and vision before any permanent vision loss occurs. It's also great for noting any out-of-normal prescription needs or changes in young kids.
